Keep It Simple: Focus On Your Goal

I’ve been in the mood to sell my truck and buy a new car. I’ve always wanted a BMW, but for reasons of function and practicality, I never got one. Instead, I kept my 2001 Ford Ranger because at the time it was me, and yet for the past 5 years I’ve longed to express myself in a different way, with a different car. But hey, I’m an over thinker. I decided it was too complicated, too confusing, I’d get screwed, I couldn’t decide what car, and what about the times I move and I need to haul my stuff? … Really? Did I just say that? I drive my truck around so that on the rare occasions aside from the year I moved 3 different times, I can get up and out of my living situation ASAP or help any and everyone else out of theirs?

Certainly this was no way to choose a vehicle. So I started craiglisting. At first I searched more practical SUVs and Toyota cars. Then I decided to take the approach I’ve taken in my writing recently… Don’t judge, don’t filter, just write. So I typed in “BMW” and searched for sale ads in the Portland area. I had the most exhilarating and enjoyable hour searching through ads for cars that I “always wanted”. What a thrill!

Then I told my friend on the way to the mall this afternoon about my plan to sell my truck and the years of memories that went with it and buy a car I’ve always wanted for no other reason that it makes me really happy. I suddenly got all technical on her. “I need to research and find a place in Southwest Portland that will replace the fabric on my left side driver’s seat.”

She matter of factly stated, “You do a lot of researching.” And I, the one who has a reason for everryyyyything I do, quickly replied, “Well, I don’t know where to go! I have to figure out where, right?” She said, “I don’t like to spend a lot of time on things that don’t require that much time. I’d just call the Ford dealership and ask them who they use or would recommend.” After I got over the fact that I hadn’t thought of that simple solution myself, I thanked her for pointing out that I didn’t need to make everything hard for myself and not everything requires extensive research. One Small Step…

Keep it simple… What one thing can you do today in 5 minutes that would typically take you longer because of the way you go about doing it? What have you wanted to begin, but haven’t known where to start? What one thing can you find an answer to through your knowledgeable network? … And what ONE small step that may take you only 5 minutes can you take to begin? Begin now. I dare you!!

My coach once told me, “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great,” and so I pass this nugget of wisdom on to you…

To One Step At A Time,

Lacy
