Today marks the date of a powerful day in religious history. We all know the details and if you don’t, you probably don’t care to know, so for those of you looking for more info on the meaning of Easter, head over to Wikipedia. As for me, I’m concerned with what draws me, what draws us, as a whole, to the teachings of Jesus.
I am not strong on one religious faith or another. Do I believe? Yes. I believe in a variety of ways of living. My belief isn’t better than yours and I won’t be saved before you are. This isn’t red rover, folks. My take? If it serves my life, makes me happy and supports the well-being of others, I’m all for it. I don’t choose to live in fear, I don’t stick to doctrines of years and years ago, I’m pretty present. I do welcome the fact that we choose to believe in something. It’s important to believe in something higher than and beyond ourselves. It gives us hope, purpose, and meaning.
I woke up this morning not feeling like going to church on one of the two major holidays that as a nation we dust off our Sunday best for the annual family church trip. And I didn’t really feel like hearing the same stories over and over again about Easter. I was craving something more and I thought perhaps I wouldn’t find it there. So, I listened to my intuition and I went out for coffee. I decided I would source value from this day in my own way. So, I got to thinking, what is it that leaves people so in awe of Easter, the day Jesus rose from the grave?
Boom! It hit me. We are amazed at the power of the spirit and the connection of the soul when, as a living being, we are truly aligned with our purpose in the way it is believed Jesus was. In a similar way, we are drawn to horrific accidents and triumphs over tragedy. Why? Because it gives us meaning, it shakes us awake, it causes us to connect, if even for a moment to the very core of who we are and to feel something beyond ourselves. We root for the underdog because we so often see ourselves as that person. And who in the world hasn’t had their own battles to wage in order to survive here? Nobody.
Imagine how powerful you would be if you believed so fully in your purpose in life that you refused to give up. That is the gift in the stories of Jesus. At all costs you would stand tall. You would wage the war. When you were beaten, stoned, mocked, and ridiculed, you stood true, knowing that your message and thus, your purpose would be received. Eventually. You listened to your guidance, your intuition and you lived from there. You aren’t too good to do the small menial tasks that keeps this world running, nor are you too small to believe that anyone is better or more capable than you. We are here together to provide value, to nurture our craving souls, to express our life purpose. When you do that, you are the living spirit of what we have celebrated for hundreds of years.
So today, as you celebrate in your own way, remember not just the story, but the teachings and the true meaning behind a man on a mission with passion as his fuel and the knowing that we all need help from each other, we all need healing, and we all need to be who we were born to be.
